Interpretive Summary: Great northern dry beans are consumed in the United States, but the majority of the production of this market class is exported to Europe, the Middle East, and Far East. These foreign markets actually prefer a larger-sized bean than that which is currently grown by US producers. USDA-ARS breeders at Prosser, WA, in cooperation with Washington State University, released two large-seeded great northern beans. These lines have 20% greater seed size than the commercial varieties grown today. These new great northen germplasm lines will facilitate an increase in the seed size of future great northern cultivars which will help to strengthen the major export markets for this dry bean market class.

Technical Abstract: Two large-seeded great northern dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasms USWA-12 and USWA-13 with resistance to Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV) and Curly Top Virus (CTV) were released jointly by the USDA-ARS, the Agricultural Research Center of Washington State University, and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of University of Idaho and Oregon State University.
