Interpretive Summary: Cottonseed oil was the edible oil standard in the United States for a long time before it was overtaken by soybean oil in the 1950's and later exceeded by oils from other sources. Now it is ranked the sixth largest edible oil in the world. But the unique characteristics and often challenging quality problems associated with cottonseed and its oil have motivated engineers and scientists constantly to seek better ways to handle, process and utilize the seed and oil. As technology progresses, the cottonseed industry faces new problems associated with seed and product quality and utilization of its final products and by-products. Research efforts have led to some encouraging progresses which include improved analytical methods, guidelines for safe use of cottonseed products as feed ingredients, recommendation of isohexane as an alternative solvents for the extraction industry, etc. Other non-food uses of cottonseed products are being further studied by several research groups in the US. This research benefits the cottonseed oil industry.

Technical Abstract: Cottonseed oil was the edible oil standard in the United States for a long time before it was overtaken by soybean oil in the 1950's and later exceeded by oils from other sources. Now it is ranked the sixth largest edible oil in the world. But the unique characteristics and often challenging quality problems associated with cottonseed and its oil have motivated engineers and scientists constantly to seek better ways to handle, process and utilize the seed and oil. A summary of the historical accounts in processing of cottonseed, refining and utilization of cottonseed oil and their future trends is given in this review article.
