PHOSPHORUS INDEXING IN CROPLAND: THE IOWA P INDEX. MEETING ABSTRACT. 2001. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Excess P reaching surface waters through soil erosion, water runoff, and subsurface water flow produces eutrophication. The P Index will help conservation planners and land users to assess the risk of P reaching surface water from fields and to make management decisions to reduce that risk. The Iowa P Index provides a relative risk rating that can be used to prioritize fields for nutrient and soil management practices. Source factors are arranged in a multiplicative manner within three components representing transport mechanisms: erosion (sediment loss), runoff (water loss), and subsurface drainage (water flow through tiles or coarse subsoil/substrata). The Index sums estimates of P delivery to get an overall estimate that is placed in one of 5 categories (very low to very high). The Index is intended to be part of the NRCS nutrient management planning process developed by the land user and resource planner and is not to be used as a regulatory tool. The current version will be tested and modified periodically as new research data become available. |
