PAPER NO. 011139 Interpretive Summary: A new, improved saw gin stand (U. S. Patent number 6,061,875) has been developed at the USDA-ARS ginning laboratory in Lubbock, Texas. The new saw gin stand is known as the powered roll gin stand. This gin has a powered paddle roll turning the seed roll and rotating seed fingers regulating seed discharge. To date, this gin stand has shown improvements in comparisons with the laboratory's conventional high capacity gin stand in increased throughput, turnout, and some fiber properties. Previous studies evaluating the gin stand demonstrated performance yielding approximately 7 percent more lint (35 pounds per bale) from the seed cotton while producing slightly better staple length. However, the previous research was based on operating conditions that were optimal while reginning cottonseed. This research focuses on two studies to determine the powered roll gin stand's optimum operating parameters when ginning seed cotton. Determination of the optimum settings were based on the best overall turnout, processing rate, and fiber quality grades. Results indicate a paddle roll loading rate of 16 or 22 amps produced the best results in terms of processing rate and fiber quality. Likewise, the optimum operating speeds of the seed finger, paddle roll, and gin saw appear to be 11.5, 180, and 720 (rpm), respectively. A cooperative research and development program has been initiated to investigate various gin stand design factors affecting performance and lint quality. Previous studies evaluating the gin stand demonstrated performance yielding approximately seven percent more lint (35 pounds per bale) from the seed cotton while producing slightly better staple length. This research focused on determining the optimum speeds and loading rates for the paddle roll, saw, and seed finger roll components of the powered roll gin stand while ginning seed cotton based on turnout, processing rate, and fiber quality data. Results indicate a paddle roll loading rate of 16 or 22 amps produced the best results in terms of processing rate and fiber quality.
