Screening for quantitative trait loci affecting growth and carcass traits in cattle [Abstract]. Plant and Animal Genome X. San Diego, CA. p. 220. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: A genomic scan for quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting growth, carcass composition and meat quality traits was conducted. Two hundred nineteen microsatellite markers were genotyped on 176 of 500 progeny from a Brahman X Angus sire mated to mostly MARC III dams. Based on retail product yield (RP) and fat yield (FY) individuals were selected for genotyping. Traits analyzed in the study were birth weight (BW), hot carcass weight (HW), retail product yield, fat yield, marbling (MA), USDA yield grade (YG), and estimated kidney, heart and pelvic fat (KPH). A significant QTL (expected proportion of false positives= .05) was detected for marbling at 54 cM from the beginning of the linkage map on chromosome 2. Suggestive QTL (expected number of false positives = 1) were detected for FY (50 cM), RP (53 cM) and YG (63 cM) on chromosome 1, for MA (56 cM), RP (70 cM), and KPH (79 cM) on chromosome 3, for MA (44 cM), HW (49 cM), and KPH (62 cM) on chromosome 16, ,and for FY (35 cM) on chromosome 17. Two QTL for BW were identified, one on chromosome 20 (12 cM) and the other on chromosome 21 (56 cM). An additional QTL was detected for RP, FY, and YG at cM 26 on chromosome 26. QTL on chromosomes 1, 2, and 3 confirm prior findings of QTL from independent studies. The remaining QTL need to be assessed in other populations. |
