Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Porcine respiratory disease complex is a multifactorial pneumonia caused by infection with multiple pathogens. Previously we demonstrated that the combination of PRRSV and B. bronchiseptica leaves pigs more susceptible to pulmonary infection with opportunistic bacteria such as Pasteurella multocida. We are now examining whether B. bronchiseptica and/or PRRSV predisposes to colonization and disease with H. parasuis. Both B. bronchiseptica and PRRSV increased the colonization of the upper respiratory tract with H. parasuis. The combination of PRRSV and B. bronchiseptica did not increase colonization of H. parasuis to any greater extent than did either PRRSV or B. bronchiseptica by themselves. Only PRRSV consistently increased isolation of H. parasuis from the lung.
