The review highlights the strengths and weaknesses of individual and combined analytical approaches using both spectroscopic methods and separation techniques. This review is of use to scientists in academia, government and industry conducting speciation research.

This written review, prepared for the publication Trends in Analytical Chemistry, provides a critical evaluation of the contributions of 30 authors to 15 chapters focusing on elemental speciation techniques. The review concludes that this text provides a much needed comprehensive review of the elemental speciation literature and notes that the text presents a systematic approach to speciation providing everything from information on sampling to separation and instrumental detection conditions as well as a significant number of specific applications. The two key issues related to speciation (sensitivity and selectivity) are discussed in detail in the text and the importance of reference materials for elemental speciation is emphasized.
