EFFECT OF EXOGENOUS INTERLEUKIN-18 AND IL-12 IN THE COURSE OF BRUCELLA ABORTUS 2308 INFECTION IN MICE. CLINICAL AND DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY IMMUNOLOGY. vol. 9, pp. 491-92, 2002. Interpretive Summary: In this study the injection of a combination of the cytokines IL-12 and IL-18 reduced the number of Brucella abortus bacteria that were found in mice after an infection with the bacteria. It appears that the reason these injections protected the mice from infection was that the cells from the injected mice had an increased capacity to produce the important cytokine Interferon-gamma very early during the challenge infection. Technical Abstract: In this study we demonstrated that combined inoculation of IL-12 and IL-18 reduced the number of bacteria in spleens of mice infected with Brucella abortus 2308 and that the effect of the treatment was mediated by an increa capability of spleen cells to produce IFN-gamma at the early phase of infection |
