Interpretive Summary: This paper describes a gene causing a mild reaction to lettuce mosaic. When combined with a previously described resistance gene, a higher level of resistance is obtained. Lettuce mosaic is a serious disease in lettuce and the results described in this paper will be useful in helping lettuce producers to grow a higher quality crop.

Technical Abstract: In crosses between parents producing a mild or susceptible reaction to lettuce mosaic virus, a single gene segregated. The heterozygote reacted in an intermediate manner. In crosses between mild and resistant parents, the mild gene and the resistant gene segregated independently and produced a new phenotype, combining resistant and mild alleles, which is usually symptomless. The gene for mild is named Mi'Mi, where Mi' gives the mild phenotype. Breeding is in progress to combine the mild and resistant traits in development of lettuce cultivars.
