Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Surface energy flux estimates over the Jornada Experimental Range, New Mexico, USA, derived from two different remote sensing approaches, are compared. The first approach, known as a Two-Source Energy Balance model (TSEB), partitions surface energy fluxes into contributions from soil and vegetation. TSEB is well suited to modeling fluxes over heterogeneous and sparsely vegetated landscapes. The second approach, known as the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL), is characterized by it ability to model fluxes with minimal inputs aside from remote sensing observations. Both approaches are distinguished by their use of thermal infrared observations to determine surface temperatures. Using recent ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection radiometer) imagery, we show instances where TSEB and SEBAL results are compatible and where there are discrepancies. Sources of discrepancies and suggestions for model limprovement will be discussed |
