Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Regional monitoring of agricultural crop condition has traditionally been accomplished using NOAA AVHRR (1 km) data. New methods for assessing crop yields are developed by integrating biophysical parameters retrieved from remotely sensed imagery with crop simulation models. The MODIS imagery offers an opportunity for an improved resolution and daily coverage required for operational applications. The objective of this research was to assess the application of MODIS data for operation crop condition and yields. A field study was conducted in the spring wheat belt of Northern Kazakhstan. The study focused on one county and twenty very large fields were monitored for crop reflectance, LAI, soil moisture, other growth parameters and yields. Vegetation classification for the region was developed by selecting area of interest that represented the different combination of soil and vegetation around the county. A radiative transfer rmodel was used to develop the LAI parameters from the MODIS 250-m data. crop yield model was calibrated for the study fields. Parameters such as LAI derived from MODIS imagery were integrated in the crop model to develop a yield map for the county.
