Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station (NCRPIS) in Ames, Iowa conserves important germplasm collections of carrots and their wild relatives (the genus Daucus), along with 34 other genera of umbels. These collections are maintained as part of the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System and are distributed freely for scientific research and new product development. The NCRPIS holds more than 1000 different populations of Daucus representing 13 species and more than 1000 umbel populations. This article describes the methods used by the NCRPIS to preserve the genetic diversity of these collections including a description of insect pollination protocols to produce control-pollinated seeds.
