Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The new MODIS satellite imagery offers an opportunity for operational applications in assessment of crop condition and yields. The 1-km AVHRR imagery is not suitable for categorization retrieval of field level parameter and the Landsat data is not frequent enough for monitoring changes in crop condition during the critical crop growth periods. The objective of this research is to evaluate the application of MODIS data for classification of spring crop and assess yields in north Kazakhstan. Ground measurements were made to support classification of spring wheat and retrieval of crop parameters. A crop simulation model was calibrated for conditions in Kazakhstan and the crop yields were simulated for Akmola Oblast (600x500 km) in northern Kazakhstan. The results showed the spatial variability of crop yields, which was within the limits of the yield reports from the Kazakhstan Ministry of Agriculture.
