Technical Abstract: Ninety-five accessions of Chinese germplasm reported last year (Dilday et al., 2001) were evaluated for grain yield and disease reactions in field tests. All but 6 of them were indica. The yield test was conducted in the same way as last year, i.e. 4 maturity groups formed by the heading dates collected in 1999. In very early group 1, 4 accessions had yields comparable to Maybelle (152 (bu/A). Twelve out of 13 accessions were rated resistant to leaf blast and panicle blast while Farm Buster and Maybelle were very susceptible. In early group 2, 4595 and Chunzhi No11 (179 and 187 bu/A) yielded significantly higher than Cocodrie (134 bu/A), the highest yielding check in this group. Twenty-three accessions were resistant to panicle blast, in which 16 had visual ratings of 0, while Maybelle was very susceptible (8.3). In intermediate group 3, 4633 yielded 194 bu/A, and was the only line having higher yield than LaGrue (150 bu/A), the best check. All 28 accessions in this group were resistant to panicle blast with ratings ranging from 0.0 to 0.5 while LaGrue was susceptible (rating 7.5). In late group 4, 16 accessions had yields ranging from 133 to 166 bu/A and were comparable to Drew (158 bu/A), the best check. All 26 accessions in this group were uniformly resistant to panicle blast as indicated by the ratings ranging from 0.0 to 1.7 while Lamont was susceptible (7.0). The disease data is very encouraging and suggests that most of the Chinese accessions have the desirable combination of blast resistance and sheath blight tolerance.
