DURUM WHEAT QUALITY REPORT. 2002. pp. 1-45. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Commercially grown cultivars and experimental lines of durum wheat were grown by breeders at cooperative experiment stations throughout the Northern Great Plains areas. Durum was tested for kernel, milling, semolina, and dough properties. Durum was also tested for spaghetti-cooking quality on selected samples. Durum translocation lines, which were developed to serve a dual purpose in bread baking and in pasta processing, were tested for both flour and semolina quality. In 2000/2001, over 700 samples of durum (excluding durum translocation lines) were tested for quality. This report is intended to provide breeders with quality data as an aid when selecting and releasing experimental lines for commercial production, comparing experimental lines with existing commercial cultivars, and evaluating the effects of different environmental conditions on durum wheat quality. Wheat producers, domestic and international markets, millers, pasta processors, and commodity groups use this report to evaluate the processing and end use potential of new wheat lines that would meet their specific needs. |
