Soil co2 evolution: is soil drying and rewetting substrate-induced respiration?. American Society of Agronomy Meetings. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Since soils naturally dry and rewet in the field, CO2 evolution from soil dried and rewetted in the laboratory may closely mimic the natural environment. The flush of CO2 from drying and rewetting is most likely from the partial desiccation of the active microbial biomass. Infrared CO2 analysis indicates a strong relationship with the flush from drying and rewetting with C accumulated in 30 day incubation. Therefore, soils researchers may find this rapid flush of CO2 a useful tool in a variety of applications. |
