Citation: Henry, T.J., Ferreira, P.S. 2003. Three new genera and three new species of neotropical hyaliodini, with new combinations and new synonymy (hemiptera: heteroptera: miridae: deraeocorinae). Journal of New York Entomological Society. 111:96-119

Interpretive Summary: The family Miridae, commonly called plant bugs, represents the largest family of true bugs and contains numerous agriculturally important species. Many plant bugs, such as lygus bugs, cotton fleahopper, and black grass bugs, are important pests causing significant economic losses. In contrast, a growing number of other plant bugs are recognized as important predators and are considered beneficial. The plant bugs treated in this paper belong to the latter group of beneficial bugs. This paper presents the descriptions of three new genera and three new species, and the transfer of three known species to a new genus. One other species is shown to be the same as another. These changes and new names are provided for a forthcoming study to identify and better understand the relationships of a larger predatory group of plant bugs restricted to the Western Hemisphere. This information will be useful to all researchers and agricultural specialists involved in the biological control of crop pests.

Technical Abstract: Three new genera of Hyaliodini are described to provide names for a forthcoming study on the phylogenetic relationships of the genera within the subfamily Deraeocorinae. The new genus Dicyphanisca is described to accommodate the new species D. marginella from Ecuador; the new genus Froeschnerisca, for Hyaliodocoris (described in Hyaliodomiris Carvalho) andinus (Carvalho), n. comb.; and the new genus Paracarniella, for Paracarnus cubanus Bruner (type species), n. comb., Paracarnus mexicanus Distant, n. comb., Hyaliodes sabaensis Carvalho, n. comb., and the new species P. dominicanensis from the Dominican Republic and P. puertoricensis from Puerto Rico. Hyaliodes azteca Carvalho is considered a junior synonym of Paracarnus mexicanus Distant. Provided for each are a dorsal and lateral adult photograph, selected scanning electron photomicrographs, illustrations of male and female genitalia, and descriptions and diagnoses to help distinguish these new taxa from other Hyaliodini.
