CONTROL OF PATHOGENS IN LIQUID SWINE MANURE USING NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS TREATMENT. PORCI MONOGRAPH NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH (SPAIN). 2002. V. 7. P. 69-79. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This monograph, written in Spanish, describes pathogen reduction in manure in a multistage system where first the solids and liquid in swine manure are separated with polymer, followed by biological N removal using nitrification and denitrification and then P extraction through lime precipitation. Each step of the treatment system was evaluated for its effectiveness in reducing pathogens and pathogen indicators by counting total and fecal coliforms, enterococci, and salmonellae on selective and differential nutrient media. Our results indicate that biological N removal treatment is very effective in reducing pathogens in liquid swine manure and that the phosphorus removal step via calcium phosphate precipitation produces a sanitized effluent free of pathogens. |
