Interpretive Summary: This paper describes the development of two tetraploid rice germplasms that have unusually high seed set for tetraploids, approaching that of normal diploid rice. Tetraploids have very large grains, about 60% larger than diploids. This material opens the possibility of breeding tetraploid rice for novelty and/or production uses.

Technical Abstract: High seed-set tetraploid rice germplasm was developed by crossing relatively low seed-set induced and spontaneous tetraploids. Seed set in this tetraploid germplasm ranged from 60 to 85%, compared to 82 to 89% for the diploids from which these materials were derived. Grain size of the tetraploids ranged from 47 to 52 mg, compared to 23 to 33 mg for diploids. This material opens the possibility of breeding tetraploid rice for novelty and/or production uses.
