Interpretive Summary: In order to breed wheat having improved resistance to leaf rust, it is important to know the genes for resistance present in widely grown varieties. By way of traditional crossing and backcrossing, we identified the genes present in 'Mit', 'Sturdy', 'TAM 107', 'TAM 301', and 'TAM 302'. These varieties can now be used in breeding programs that focus on combining different genes for resistance to leaf rust.

Technical Abstract: Inheritance of seedling and adult-plant resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) was investigated in the cultivars 'Mit', 'Sturdy', 'TAM 107', 'TAM 301', and 'TAM 302'. Backcross lines were developed in the spring wheat 'Thatcher', with leaf rust resistance derived from all the cultivars tested. Mit was found to have Lr2a, and Lr10 for seedling resistance and Lr34 for adult-plant resistance. Sturdy was found to possess Lr10, Lr12, and Lr34. The genes Lr10 and Lr12 were found in TAM 107. The genes Lr24 and Lr26 were found in TAM 301, while TAM 302 was found to posses Lr3a, Lr16, and Lr13.
