Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Ten locations contributed useable data for this year's report. The Busch Agricultural Resources nursery grown in Minot last year was moved to Sidney, MT this year. Difficulties with the Crookston nursery resulted in no data being submitted from that nursery. The substitution of Osnabrock for Langdon continues (about 12 miles east). The reader is referred to the "Nursery Conditions" section immediately following this summary for other comments concerning specific locations. Average planting date was 4 days later than the 30-year average, while average heading date was about nine days later. The average planting date of April 30th was only four days earlier than last year. Heading date (July 3rd) was only one day later than last year. Average yield (3832 kg/ha or 71bu/a) was lower than the 30-year average and quite a bit lower than last year (4402 kg/ha). Entries with the best yields were M112, 6B95-2482, M113, M111, and ND17643. Four stations reported test weight; the average of 64 kg/hl was very close to that of last year (65.4). The greatest test weights were recorded for M109, M112, 2ND18365, Robust, and M113. Lodging data were reported from three locations, including Morris, Carrington, and Sidney. The five entries with the least lodging were ND17655, ND17643, ND17687, 6B98-9339, and BT389. The reader should remember that 0% lodging was entered for all entries in 1996 due to a lack of data. Thus, the 10-year averages will be somewhat skewed by the 1996 data. Average plant height was 77.8 cm. Shortest entries were M110, M111, M109, M112, and ND16301. Kernel plumpness data were reported from Bottineau, Sidney, Hamiota, and Kernen.
