Interpretive Summary: COTTON YARN PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY IS SENSITIVE TO THE PRESENCE OF NATURALLY OCCURING NONCELLULOSIC SUGAR, WAX, METALS, AND OTHER SOLVENT EXTRACTABLE MATERIALS. CONCENTRATIONS OF THE MATERIALS ALONG WITH FIBER COHESION MEASUREMENTS ON A SERIES OF COTTON REPRESENTING FIVE DIFFERENT U.S. GROWING AREAS WERE CONDUCTED. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THESE PROPERTIES AND YARN PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE AND PROPERTIES IN ROTOR AND RING SPINNING SYSTEMS WERE DETERMINED. INCREASING LEVELS OF ETHYL ALCOHOL EXTRACTABLES, SUGAR, WAX, ASH RESIDUES FROM BURNING THE FIBER, THE METALS POTASSIUM AND MAGNESIUM, AND FIBER FRICTIONAL MEASUREMENTS CORRELATED WITH INCREASING YARN SKEIN BREAK FACTOR, SINGLE END YARN STRENGTH, AND RING SPUN NEPS AND DECREASES IN ROTOR SPUN NEPS AND EVENNESS THICK AND THIN PLACES. INCREASING LEVELS OF THE METAL, CALCIUM, HAD AN OVERALL NEGATIVE EFFECT ON YARN STRENGTH AND CONTRIBUTED TO INCREASED EVENNESS THICK AND THIN PLACES AND ENDS DOWN IN SPINNING.

Technical Abstract: A SERIES OF DOMESTICALLY GROWN COTTONS CONSISTING OF NINE VARIETIES FROM FIVE DIFFERENT GROWING AREAS WERE ANALYZED FOR REDUCING SUGARS, WAX, ETHYL ALCOHOL EXTRACTABLES, FIBER ASH RESIDUES, LIGHT METAL CONTENT, AND FRICTIONAL PROPERTIES. DETERMINED VALUES WERE CORRELATED WITH BOTH ROTOR AND RING YARN SPINNING PERFORMANCE AND YARN PROPERTIES. ROTOR AND RING YARN BREAK FACTOR AND SINGLE END YARN STRENGTH MEASUREMENTS FOR ALL COTTONS CORRELATED VERY POSITIVELY WITH THE AMOUNT OF ETHYL ALCOHOL EXTRACTABLE MATERIALS REMOVED FROM THE FIBER. SKEIN BREAK FACTOR AND SINGLE END YARN STRENGTH MEASUREMENTS ALSO SHOWED A TENDENCY TO INCREASE AS THE AMOUNT OF REDUCING SUGARS, WAX, AND ASH RESIDUES INCREASED. USTER EVENNESS THICK AND THIN PLACES DECREASED AS REDUCING SUGAR, WAX, ALCOHOL EXTRACTABLES, AND FIBER ASH RESIDUE INCREASED. RING NEPS INCREASED WHILE ROTOR NEPS DECREASED. INCREASED LEVELS OF THE METALS POTASSIUM AND MAGNESIUM CORRELATED WITH INCREASED SKEIN BREAK FACTOR AND SINGLE END YARN STRENGTH AND LOWER EVENNESS THICK AND THIN PLACES. CONVERSELY, AS THE LEVELS OF THE METAL CALCIUM INCREASED,YARN SKEIN BREAK FACTOR AND SINGLE END YARN STRENGTH DECREASED AND EVENNESS THICK AND THIN PLACES INCREASED.
