Interpretive Summary: The incidence of sugarcane yellow leaf virus in clones in the CP variety development program increases via natural infection the longer the clones are in the program. Little resistance is evident using the current breeding population. New resistant germplasm must be used if resistant sugarcane clones are to be developed.

Technical Abstract: The incidence of sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) in sugarcane clones increased the longer the clones were in the variety development program and the exposure to natural infection increased. During 1998 to 2002, the average incidence of SCYLV in Stage II clones was 30.1 % while SCYLV incidence in Stage IV clones, in the program 3 years longer, was 55.6 %. Only a few clones had plants with an incidence of sugarcane yellow leaf virus below 25 % by the time they were advanced to Stage IV. These clones may have partial resistance to the virus.
