Interpretive Summary: Two oilseed sunflower genetic stock composites were developed and released by the USDA-ARS, Fargo, ND, the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Manhattan, KS, and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Fargo, ND. SURES-1 is an oilseed maintainer genetic stock composite and SURES-2 is an oilseed restorer genetic stock composite. The genetic stock composites are available for use by sunflower industry and public researchers to create hybrids, parental lines, or improved germplasm lines with resistance to the herbicide tribenuron (Express). SURES-1 was derived by crossing the USDA maintainer lines, HA 424, HA 406, and HA 89 with pollen collected from a wild Helianthus annuus plant resistant to Express. The wild H. annuus plants were found growing in Kansas and seed collected from those plants was planted and screened for herbicide resistance at Kansas State University. Pollen was collected from those plants and sent to the USDA-ARS, Northern Crop Science Laboratory, Fargo, ND, where crosses to cultivated sunflower lines were initiated. SURES-2 was derived by crossing the USDA restorer lines, RHA 377, RHA 392, and RHA 376 with pollen collectd from a wild Helianthus annuus plant resistant to Express. Both SURES-1 and SURES-2 are composites of seed harvested from F3 plants found homozygous for resistance to tribenuron.
