Interpretive Summary: Scientists working with strains of the pathogen causing the late blight disease of potatoes and closely related species experience great difficulties in classifying, distinguishing, and tracking the movement of these microbes with available taxonomic tools. We used molecular techniques to search for pathogen diversity and variation. We were able to trace the origin and spread of these organisms in nature using these techniques. This information will be useful to plant scientists attempting to identify and to study the taxonomic relatedness of this very diverse group of microorganisms. Technical Abstract: The potato late-blight disease is caused by the pseudofungus Phytophthora infestans (Oomycetes). This pathogen was of historical importance as it caused the Irish Potato Famine. There is currently a worldwide resurgence of the disease. Following worldwide migrations as well as being able to discriminate P. infestans from related species are key issues. We present sequence variation of five inter-genic mitochondrial DNA spacers (mtDNA-IGS) for P. infestans and four related taxa.
