Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We have been examining the nuclear Hsp90 chaperone gene for usefulness in phylogenetic prediction. Only one copy of this gene is known from C. elegans. With degenerate primers for partial Hsp90 sequences, only one copy of Hsp90 was detected in Heterodera glycines and Meloidogyne javanica. Even partial Hsp90 sequence could produce well-supported MrBayes nine-taxon trees with expected topology, unlike longer sequences from LSU and SSU ribosomal DNA genes. Both LSU and Hsp90 genes supported the monophyly of Meloidogyne with Pratylenchus instead of Meloidogyne with Heterodera. Phylogenetic relationships of metazoans using the entire molecule placed nematodes paraphyletic to insects.
