Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Induction of adventitious shoot morphogenesis is influenced by phytohormone type and concentrations, and genotypes can vary in their responses. Leaves of 'Bartlett' and 'Beurre Bosc' from in vitro shoot cultures were incubated for 4 weeks in the dark on a modified Chevreau and Leblay medium containing either NAA or IBA at 1, 3, or 5 M, followed by incubation on fresh auxinless medium for 4 weeks. There were significant two- and three-way interactions which affected the mean number of adventitious shoot. Increasing concentrations of both auxins resulted in linear increases in the number of adventitious shoots of 'Bartlett.' Increasing concentrations of NAA resulted in a decrease in adventitious shoot regeneration of 'Beurre Bosc,' whereas 5 M IBA was not significantly better than 3 M IBA. The highest number of adventitious shoots of 'Bartlett' were produced by 5 M IBA, while 1 M NAA, 3 M IBA, and 5 M IBA were equally effective for 'Beurre Bosc.' Increasing auxin concentration also resulted in linear increases in the number of adventitous roots, especially for 'Beurre Bosc.'
