Technical Abstract: GA96-211 cotton germplasm line was developed by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 2003. GA96-211 has resistance to fusarium wilt [caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum], resistance and tolerance to root-knot nematode [Meloidogyne incognita], and desirable fiber quality. GA96-211 is root-knot nematode tolerant and produced similar yields in 1,3-dichloropropene fumigated and non-fumigated plots in 2001 and 2002 field trials. Yield of nematode intolerant >Deltapine 5415= was lower (P<0.05) without fumigation. Levels of M. incognita (number/100 cm-3 soil) at harvest in non-fumigated plots were lower (P<0.05) under GA96-211 than under nematode-susceptible Deltapine 5415. In two greenhouse trials, GA96-211 supported about 54% less root-knot reproduction than Deltapine 5415. In the relative absence of root-knot nematode, lint yields of GA96-211 were similar to those of Deltapine 5415 in 16 field trials. Lint fraction of GA96-211 averaged 2-3% less (P<0.01) than that of Deltapine 5415. GA96-211 has longer upper half mean fiber length (UHM) and lower micronaire readings compared with certain popular cultivars. The upper half mean fiber length of GA96-211 was 3-5% longer (P<0.10) than that of Deltapine 5415 and Deltapine 458BR in irrigated trials. Micronaire readings of GA96-211 (4.4-4.5) were lower (P<0.10) than those of either Deltapine 5415 (4.8-5.1) or Deltapine 458BR (4.8-5.1).
