Interpretive Summary: 'Tillamook' and 'Pinnacle' are new June-bearing strawberry cultivars for the Pacific Northwest from the USDA-ARS. 'Tillamook' and 'Pinnacle' have very high yields of very large fruit that ripen in the mid-season. The plants are very productive in their first and second harvest years in the field. The fruit quality is excellent as a fresh product and very good when processed. The fruit are very attractive with excellent flavor. The plants maintain their vigor well through the second harvest season despite heavy virus pressure. Both will be excellent cultivars for home use, fresh market sales, and for processing.

Technical Abstract: The USDA-ARS in cooperation with the Agricultural Experiment Stations in Oregon, Washington and Idaho announce the release of 'Tillamook' and 'Pinnacle' June-bearing strawberries (Fragaria x ananassas). 'Tillamook', tested as ORUS 1816-2, was selected in 1996 from the cross 'Cuesta' x 'Puget Reliance'. 'Pinnacle', tested as ORUS 1826-2, was selected in 1996 from the cross 'Laguna' x ORUS 1267-250 ('Redcrest' x ORUS 869-13 [WSU 1623 x 'Redgem']). Both consistently have higher yields than 'Totem' in their first harvest season and 'Tillamook' consistently maintains this greater yield in the second harvest season. While always statistically significant, 'Tillamook' and 'Pinnacle' fruit have been larger than those produced by 'Totem' and 'Puget Reliance' in every planting and year where they have been in trial together. This large fruit size is combined with an open canopy making the fruit very visible and more efficient to pick than currently grown cultivars. Fruit have a glossy, bright-red external color slightly lighter than 'Totem'. The internal color is bright but more similar to 'Puget Reliance' than to 'Totem'. Fruit are very firm and have a very good flavor as a fresh fruit. Both also have good processing characteristics. When compared to 'Totem', they cap very well and have similar soluble solids and pH levels, but lower titratable acidity. Plants of both are vigorous in the first year but 'Pinnacle' can decline more noticeably than 'Tillamook' in non-ideal sites in the second year. The most outstanding characteristics of 'Tillamook' and 'Pinnacle' are their high yield of very large, attractive, high quality fruit that are well suited for the local fresh market as well as for processing.
