Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: As the country advances under the mandate to eliminate health disparities by the year 2010, the under representation of minorities in clinical research has become a major public and professional issue. Research institutions are increasingly challenged to comply with the NIH regulations concerning recruitment of minority subjects. In Boston, where non-white population passed the 50% mark based on 2000 census data, a coalition of research staff and agencies serving minority elders has met since 1994 to address cultural considerations, write collaborative proposals and develop programs for community education and health promotion. This symposium provides the experience and best practices of several of the partners in this process: an academic research center, the Multicultural Coalition on Aging and a large community based agency serving older Chinese Americans.
