Nucleotide sequence of a CDNA clone (Accession No. AY274834) for phospholipase D (PLD) MRNA from peanut (Arachis hypogaea). GenBank, National Center for Biotechnology Information. Accession No. AY274834. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Preharvest aflatoxin contamination has been identified by the peanut industry as the most serious challenge facing the industry worldwide. Drought stress is the most important environmental factor exacerbating Aspergillus infection and aflatoxin contamination in peanut. In characterizing genes involved in the tolerance to drought stress in peanuts, we have identified a novel PLD gene, encoding a putative phospholipase D, a main enzyme responsible for the drought-induced degradation of membrane phospholipids in plants. The sequence of this PLD gene in peanut has been completed and submitted to GenBank and will provide a useful tool for researchers to explore the function in peanut. Further study is needed to genetically and physiologically characterize the PLD in peanut and to gain a better understanding of its function and relationship with drought-tolerance. |
