Journal of Food Protection. August 8 - 11, 2004. Phoenix, AZ Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Foodborne bacterial pathogens add a tremendous costs to the economy. There is the costs in human suffering, lost productivity and sometimes death to individuals who get sick from contaminated foods. There is the added costs to the producer and processor of implementing testing programs and interventions designed to eliminate or significantly reduce the presence of any pathogens on their products. There is the potential costs of recalls of products with the subsequent potential loss of consumer confidence in the companies products. There is the costs of litigation from consumers who became sick or died from eating contaminated foods. In the poultry industry potential on-farm interventions include, added biosecurity, feed control programs, feed amendments, vaccination programs, hatchery control programs and competitive exclusion treatments. The costs of each of these programs individually or in specified combinations will be detailed. |
