Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This study examined the genetic relatedness and antibiotic sensitivity profiles of Campylobacter coli isolates recovered from the feces of 3 sows and 18 piglets which were housed in a common farrowing barn within an integrated swine production facility. C. coli colonies were cultured on Campy-Cefex agar following broth enrichment. Ribotypes were characterized on the RiboPrinter® Microbial Characterization System following DNA digestion with the restriction enzyme PstI. Antibiotic sensitivity profiles were determined by disc diffusion. C. coli isolates segregated into 20 ribogroups and exhibited 32 antibiotic susceptibility profiles. No discernible pattern of ribogroup relatedness was observed among the sows and piglets or among littermates. No evidence of direct transfer of specific C. coli ribotypes from sows to piglets was observed. Results suggest a high level of diversity in both ribotype and antibiotic sensitivity profiles among C. coli from related pigs housed in a single facility.
