Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Poa annua L. (annual bluegrass) has received considerable attention in the golf course industry due to its wide spread abundance and high phenotypic variation. Recent efforts have resulted in the development of perennial turf-type annual bluegrass. Objectives of this study were to: 1) collect perennial Poa annua from golf course greens in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, 2) evaluate the collection for turf and seed production agronomic characteristics, 3) relate agronomic characterization to geographic origin, and 4) develop a core collection subset. Two hundred greens type annual bluegrass accessions were collected from 78 golf courses. Two site and four accession parameters were recorded during collection. Accessions were also space planted in a randomized complete-block with three replications, and evaluated for several agronomic parameters in 1999 and 2000 field studies at Pullman, WA. Variability was observed for parameters evaluated. There was correlation between several parameters and some parameters were correlated with region of origin. A core collection subset was developed. The variability identified in this study can be used in breeding programs to develop superior greens-type annual bluegrass for use on Pacific Northwest golf courses.
