Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: As the population increases so does production of farm animals and their products. As the agricultural world expands, humans face a growing problem of increase contact with microbes that colonize livestock and poultry. Being able to rapidly detect the pathogenic versions of these microbes in the environmental becomes paramount in protecting oursleves against disease. The challenges of rapid detection of these pathogens in their varied matrices will be discussed.
