Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The plant family Tamaricaceae contains 3-4 genera and some 80 species of shrubs and small trees, usually halophytic. They are native to Europe, Asia, and Africa, but species of Tamarix have become naturalized in Australia and the Americas. This treatment reviews the latest knowledge of vegetative morphology, anatomy, flower structure, embryology, pollen morphology, pollination, karyology, seed dispersal, phytochemistry, affinities, distribution, parasites, paleobotany, economic importance, and generic delimitations of the family. A key to the genera is also included, along with a bibliography of manuscripts that have influenced our current understanding of Tamaricaceae.
