Interpretive Summary: The neonicotinoids are a new class of insecticides utilized to control sucking insects such as rice hoppers, aphids, thrips, whiteflies, termites, turf insects, soil insects, and beetles. They can be used as a crop and structural pest insecticide, a seed treatment, and a flea-control treatment. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are sensitive, selective, and capable of cost effective and high throughput, which make them ideal for the determination of pesticides in a myriad of applications where these properties are required. ELISAs developed by different laboratories for the neonicotinoid insecticides can be an alternative method to analyze these insecticides in environmental samples and can overcome some of the shortcomings of conventional instrumental analysis. Neonicotinoids are the fastest selling insecticide class in the world and are expected to be extensively used. As such, residues may present environmental and food safety problems. Therefore, a rapid assay, such as ELISA, is needed. This mini review summarizes currently available ELISAs for the neonicotinoid insecticides imidacloprid, acetamiprid and thiamethoxam. Technical Abstract: The neonicotinoids are a new class of insecticides acting as agonists at the postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are sensitive, selective, and capable of cost effective and high throughput, which make them ideal for the determination of pesticides in a myriad of applications where these properties are required. ELISAs developed by different laboratories for the neonicotinoid insecticides can be an alternative method to analyze these insecticides in environmental samples and can overcome some of the shortcomings of conventional instrumental analysis.
