Citation: Hammond, J.J., Miller, J.F., Rasmussen, J.B. 2004. Registration of 'Nekoma' flax. Crop Science. 44:1022.

Interpretive Summary: 'Nekoma' flax was developed and tested cooperatively by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS and was released in July, 2002. Nekoma is a blue-flowered, brown-seeded F5 derived selection from the cross U605/Bison. U605 was the experimental number designation of the cultivar Omega, released by the USDA-ARS and North Dakota State University released in 1990. Nekoma has higher yield, higher oil content, higher Iodine Value, and higher linolenic acid content than the check variety McGregor, when tested in 39 trials over three states and two provinces of Canada. Nekoma is resistant to all known North American races of flax rust. Nekoma is adapted to the north-central flax-growing region of the US. Seed classes are breeder, foundation, registered, and certified.

Technical Abstract: 'Nekoma' flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) was developed and tested cooperatively by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS and was released in July, 2002. Nekoma is resistant to all known North American races of flax rust [Melampsora lini (Ehrenb.) Desmaz.]. Nekoma is adapted to the north-central flax-growing region of the US. Seed classes are breeder, foundation, registered, and certified.
