Meeting Abstract. 50th Conference of Mississippi Entomological Association Interpretive Summary: The tarnished plant bug has developed resistance to both organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides. To overcome and manage resistance, we have to understand mechanisms of the resistance. This study was designed to compare resistance-related gene structures, gene expression levels, and enzyme activities between susceptible and resistant strains. Several chemical inhibitors were also explored for suppression of the resistance. Technical Abstract: Cytochrome P450 and esterase cDNAs were cloned from the tarnished plant bug. Both gene mutation and elevated gene expression of P450 oxidase were revealed from resistant strain. Esterase and glutathione s-transferase activities were compared between susceptible and resistant strains. Resistant strain showed up to 10-fold higher esterase activity than susceptible strain. Several inhibitors could effetively suppress esterase and glutathione s-transferase activities in the resistant strain. |
