Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The negative effects of chemicals to control insect pests has led to research to improve the residual activity and shelf life of microbial-based insect control agents through formulation development. Encapsulation of the active microbes in edible ingredients provides environmentally safe and effective formulations to protect the active agent against degradation by solar radiation in the field and also to extend the storage stability of the biopesticide. These improvements make the biopesticide more attractive to consumers and improve the chance of commercialization of environmentally safe control agents. This review presents results of laboratory and field experiments that demonstrate the effectiveness of new formulations of microbes to control insect pests. This research has been conducted as a result of collaboration between U. S. and Mexican scientists and suggests that the improved biopesticide formulations will benefit insect pest management programs worldwide. |
