Publication Type: Abstract Only Publication Acceptance Date: 6/1/2003 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Predicted increases in the partial pressure of atmospheric carbon dioxide (pCO2) offer the chance for increased crop productivity because photosynthesis is enhanced at elevated pCO2. However, sustained stimulation of growth in elevated pCO2 is dependant upon the adequate supply of other nutrients, notably nitrogen. In order to increase understanding of the response of crops to long-term growth in elevated pCO2 it is important to improve understanding of the balance between carbon and nitrogen supply. We have measured the levels of glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch, protein, nitrogen, amino acids and ureides throughout the season in mature leaves of soybean grown in elevated pCO2 in the field using Free Air CO2 Enrichment technology and managed using local agricultural practices (www.soyface.uiuc.edu). |
