Interpretive Summary: Many plant diseases are spread by leafhoppers, causing hundreds of millions of dollars of crop loss annually worldwide. A species was recently implicated as a likely vector of the bacterium that causes the "crespera" disease in coffee. Its close relatives can probably also transmit the bacterium, yet two closely related species new to science were discovered. These two species are described and an identification key is provided for all closely related species. This paper will be useful for quarantine, agricultural, and research workers interested in leafhopper systematics and the transmission of bacterial diseases in coffee. Technical Abstract: Two new species of Caldwelliola are described, one from Honduras and the other from Ecuador, bringing the current total species in the genus to eleven. A key to all species is presented. One species, C. caucana, has been implicated as a likely vector of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which causes the "crespera" disease of coffee in Colombia. |
