Interpretive Summary: Anticancer Agents from Unique Natural Products Sources is a consortium of researchers from academia and industry organized in1995 in response to a request for proposals by the National Cancer Institute to establish National Cooperative Drug Discovery Groups (NCDDGs). The USDA-ARS participation in this consortium is founded on the use of isolates from the ARS Collection of Entomopathogenic Fungi, while our in house activities remain directed toward agricultural uses. The underlying theme of the overall program is to integrate the discovery of novel biologically active natural products from organisms that inhabit unique ecological niches with mechanism-directed biologically- based screening. The rationale behind this approach is that chemical diversity stems from biological diversity and environmental pressures that select for unique genotypes. This article summarizes the work of the consortium over the past 8 years and discusses a number of novel products discovered to date.
