Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Enteric septicemia of catfish is the most common disease seen by fish diagnostic laboratories. A pathogen detection assay that utilizes real-time PCR technology has been developed that allows for early and accurate detection of Edwardsiella ictaluri. Applications of the assay include diagnostics, improved disease management through tracking bacterial levels in pondfish, and improvement of disease resistance through selective breeding. Recent studies completed with the ESC assay have shown that resistant families suppress ESC infections and that innate immunity is important in disease resistance. This information is being utilized for selective breeding purposes and for selection of candidate genes that are associated with innate immunity.
