Passive protection against two eimeria species in chickens by orally administered antibodies specific for a single eimeria protein. American Veterinary Medical Association Abstract p. 21. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The protective effect of chicken egg antibody (IgY) powder prepared from hens hyperimmunized with a recombinant protein (3-1E) from Eimeria acervulina merozoites was evaluated. . The 3 treatment groups were given feed containing 0.1, 1 and 10% of the IgY powder, respectively. The chickens were orally challenged with 103 E. tenella or 5 × 103 E. acervulina oocysts. The best results were observed in the groups which received 10% of IgY powder and the oocyst production was significantly reduced. Significant improvement in body weight gain was also seen. The results indicate that the passive immunization of chickens with antigen-specific IgY powder is a promising method to confer protection against coccidiosis. |
