Interpretive Summary: Since the early 1970's there has been growing concern about the possible adverse effects of stratospheric ozone reduction and the accompanying increase in ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. In July 2003, a 'Symposium on UV Effects on Terrestrial Organisms' was organized by the senior author and held at the annual meeting of the American Society for Photobiology in Baltimore, MD. Following the meeting, participants in the symposium were encouraged to submit manuscripts on unpublished research for a symposium-in-print on 'Ultraviolet Radiation and Terrestrial Ecosystems.' Several invited manuscripts were also solicited by the junior author. The present article provides an introduction to the symposium-in-print and summarizes the findings of the initial five papers; these articles will be published in the May issue of the journal, Photochemistry and Photobiology. Three additional papers submitted by invited contributors will be published in subsequent issues of the journal.

Technical Abstract: This article provides an introduction to a Symposium-in-Print on 'Ultraviolet Radiation and Terrestrial Ecosystems'and summarizes the findings of five of the papers that were presented at an invited 'Symposium on UV Effects on Terrestrial Ecosystems' held at the annual meeting of the American Society for Photobiology in Baltimore, MD in July, 2003 or submitted by invited contributors. These papers will be published in the May issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology. Three additional invited papers will be published in subsequent issues of the journal.
