Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Maleic anhydride modified starches have many uses, such as in sealing adhesives and paper laminating adhesive formulations. A microwave assisted 5 minute method to prepare starch maleates with DS up to 0.25 was developed. The DS of 0.25 was obtained when starch in DMSO reacted with 0.5 equivalent maleic anhydride in the presence of 0.5 equivalent of phyridine with a reaction efficiency of 50%. This microwave assisted method may be used to rapidly prepare starch esters.
