Interpretive Summary: Infection by the parasites of the genus Sarcocystis cause clinical disease in livestock but rarely in dogs. Scientists at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Service and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington D.C. report chemical sarcocystosis in a dog. These findings will be of interest to veterinarians and parasitologists.

Technical Abstract: Musclar sarcocystosis is a rare infection in dogs. In the present report clinical myositis associated with an unidentified species of Sarcocystis was diagnosed in an adult dog from Canada. There was granulomatous myositis associated with nmerous immature sarcocysts in muscle biopsy. The sarcocysts were up to 550 um long and up to 45 nm wide. The sarcocyst wall was approximately 1 um thick and contained short, stubby, villar protrusions that lacked microtubules. This is the first report of clinical muscular sarcocystosis in a dog.
