Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Cotyledons account for a large part of the soybean seed, and are the site where the storage oils and proteins of economic importance are accumulated. A modified cell cycle called endoreduplication becomes prevalent in legume cotyledons when the accumulation of storage oil and protein begins. While DNA replication continues during endoreduplication, cell division ceases. The means by which this important developmental transition occurs is unknown. As a tool to be used to understand the changes that take place in the cell cycle when seed fill begins, mRNAs that encode participants in the cell cycle were purified from soybean cotyledons and cloned. This submission describes a mRNA that encodes cki2;1, a cell cycle regulatory protein that inhibits cyclin-dependent kinases.
