Microbial production of butanol: product recovery by extraction [abstract]. International Conference on Microbial Diversity. p. 265. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Production of acetone butanol ethanol (ABE) by fermentation of renewable resources (green chemistry) has been gaining strength over petrochemically derived butanol. Unfortunately, recovery of butanol by traditional distillation hampers the economics of green butanol. Liquid-liquid extraction and membrane assisted extraction (perstraction) are two novel techniques that can be applied to recover butanol from fermentation broth. It is viewed that application of these separation techniques to recover butanol would make ABE fermentation from renewable resources an economically competitive process. This topic will discuss extraction and perstraction applied to ABE batch, fed-batch, and continuous systems. |
